About The Amazon Institute

Our Mission

The Amazon Institute was founded on the belief that our youth can change the world. Given the opportunity to work on projects that address important issues, they are in a better position to lead social change.

Our mission is preservation through improving education and empowering youth to act and make decisions that promote sustainability.  We achieve this mission by providing low income and at risk students educational opportunities to learn, develop leadership skills, and become successful, contributing citizens.  We provide instruction in applied technology to build 21st century skills.  Through service learning projects we encourage collaboration among students and their peers in South America, to increase awareness and to address environmental and preservation issues.

The service-learning programs are real world projects the Amazon Institute has undertaken.  Mentors provide guidance, but the students are in leadership roles doing the real work. This improves their problem solving skills and empowers them to realize the potential they have to change the world and be productive citizens.  Use the navigations links at the top of the page to visit other sections of our website to get more details on our past student projects.

Our organization provides direct services to improve education: academic tutoring focused on excellence in science and mathematics (STEM) and early childhood reading. We provide creative mentoring, access to higher education and service projects through each office’s Local Programs. The extended family of partner organizations and past participants in the U.S., Colombia and Brazil allows us to have a a greater impact in the communities we serve.
